Joanna Mbeke is a self taught artist whose works are highly a reflection of the influences of her West African background. Brightly patterned folk and traditional art was an everyday visionary experience, along with the music, dances and superstitions that have shaped her culture. Along with Africa, past experiences throughout her travels in Central America and the Caribbean with special reference to Cuba have also found comfort and shelter in her work .Along with these traditional elements, Joanna is also influenced by the modern aspects of diaspora African cultures worldwide and primarily focuses on the issues of self identity and lost traditions.
